When it comes to decks, there are important structural elements that need to be considered. The deck’s location, height from the ground and expected load requirements (how many people will be on it at one time), will all impact the design and the materials required.
Some of these questions will automatically be determined by your budget and the amount of space you have to work with. However, there’s no reason not to browse through the information here so you have an idea of what’s available. Keep in mind though, there are many options out there so what’s listed is just a springboard for your inspiration.
Feel free to contact the friendly experienced Spinners team on 13- SPIN (13 7746) to discuss your specific deck, patio or pergola requirements.
The base or floor of your deck, patio or pergola
When it comes to patio floors, you have many choices: stones, pavers, and tiles through to coloured concretes. You can also create interesting floors by using different pavers or tiles and different textures. What used to be grass can now be converted into a stunning signature floor that really makes a statement. Remember though, simplicity is the key – so if you go for a feature floor, other decorations should be kept to a minimum.
If you’re building a deck, timber or synthetic materials are available as floor options. If using timber, you have the choice between hardwood or softwood (provided the softwood is fully treated).
There are advantages to both. Here are just a few for you to consider:
Softwood that's fully treated
Softwood is versatile, and can be used in decking and pergolas. |
Softwood such as treated pine is cost effective and is a very popular timber option. |
Softwood can be a cheaper option than using hardwoods. |
If you're considering painting your deck, then softwoods are usually the better option. Paying the extra money for hardwood, only to paint over it, may not be worth the investment. |
Hardwood
Hardwood is durable and strong, making it a popular choice for decking timber. |
Hardwood is naturally resilient to insect damage and withstands the elements better than softwood. |
Hardwoods look stunning when simply oiled or stained to highlight the natural colours and to allow the grain to show through. |
A number of synthetic materials are also available. These are usually made from sawdust mixed with resins which are then extruded into the shape and texture of normal decking. These do vary in quality, however they are all very durable and most importantly, easy to maintain. |
The Roof of your deck, patio or pergola
If you want to have a roof over your deck, patio or pergola, you can choose between either pitched or flat or even only half covering the area. Using metal, translucent polycarbonate materials, thatching, timber or tiles will depend upon how weatherproof you want the area to be and how much light you want to let through.
Shading and heating
Often you can incorporate natural elements to make the most of your outdoor living areas. For example, to receive winter sun and summer shade, a north-facing area is desirable. But, if the space you have to work with doesn’t permit this, or you want to make the most of your outside area come rain, hail or shine, there are some other solutions:
For the Outdoor Room concept there are a number of louvre systems available that can be opened and closed as required. |
Retractable awnings are a great way to make the most of the weather, all year round. During the summer months, or when the sun is directly overhead, you can wind out the awning to provide full coverage and maximum shade. When winter rolls around, the awning can easily be retracted to let the sun flow through and warm up the space! |
If your deck or pergola is covered and completely waterproof, you can consider installing electric or other forms of heating. |
The materials used and even plants incorporated in your landscaping can increase the shaded areas. Deciduous trees are a great way to let sunlight through during winter, but they also provide shade during the summer months. |
Bamboo screens are an inexpensive way to create additional shade and to increase your privacy. |
